You should soon be given the date for your first shift. Feeling nervous or excited? The main purpose of your first shift is to show you around, meet your new team and introduce you to the job. It can be overwhelming taking in all this new information and faces but don’t worry, after some time and a couple of shifts, the nerves will ease and you will be on the ball and ready to go.
Nerves when starting your first job are unavoidable but very normal, so you should prepare yourself as much as you can to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day. You should always arrive at your first shift early in the case of any travelling mishaps or nerves, so you can start off your job relaxed without feeling rushed or on edge. Being early makes a good impression and also shows your employer that you are organised, ready and keen to start your new job. Even if you are feeling a bit nervous or anxious about the unknown, just remember once you are in there and have begun the shift, it won't seem so scary.
It is important during the initial times of your employment that you do not hesitate to ask as many questions as you need. Your employer will appreciate your questions, as it shows that you are interested in what is being presented to you. It also allows you to feel empowered as the more you know, the more confident you will be in your new job. If you are ever unsure about something, be sure to ask your boss or manager before doing a task you are unsure of, this will lessen the chance of you making a mistake or doing something unsafely. Soon most things you learn will become second nature and you will go to work knowing what you have to do. Be confident and be yourself. Good luck!
